The Corona Virus is starting to take a toll on Las Vegas with far fewer visitors than usual and has forced some conventions and meetings to cancel. City officials are taking precautions in letting the public know about what they can do to prevent the spread of the virus by washing your hands often and try not to touch your face. Staying safe from a potentially devastating virus such as COVID-19 can be tricky because like most viruses are spread through contact or airborne if someone is sneezing or coughing near you.
Much of Las Vegas is slow and with the Construction Convention going on until March 14th it’s likely that Las Vegas will suffer visitation from all the media hype surrounding the Corona Virus and in the widespread panic, companies are sending a large number of employees to work from home. This is in effect causes less travel and in turn leaving Las Vegas in an economic crisis until this virus fizzles out.
A majority of the workforce in Las Vegas is at a slowdown. Most housekeepers are sent home early and transportation has fewer passengers to take from the airport to hotels. Restaurants are definitely going to feel the slowdown and may be forced to shut their doors for a couple of weeks is more reported cases keep coming in.
MGM Resorts will temporarily close buffets at ARIA, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Luxor and Excalibur, effective Sunday, March 15. With this announcement, there will be more hotels to follow suit in shutting down their buffets as well.
This is just the early stages of what’s to come as things slow down because of the COVID-19 virus. This pandemic is already shutting down major events around the globe and many future events that may be on the horizon. It’s hard to tell when this virus will subside and die off. But until then Las Vegas remains in Crisis mode until further notice from city officials.
Prevent the Spread of COVID-19
Practice everyday preventive actions. Remind everyone in your household of the importance of practicing everyday preventive actions that can help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.
- Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects daily (e.g., tables, countertops, light switches, doorknobs, and cabinet handles) using regular household detergent and water.
- If surfaces are dirty, they should be cleaned using a detergent and water prior to disinfection.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
